Overview of bitumen-rubber mastics
Bitumen-rubber mastics MBR - compositions of "cold" and "hot" application, intended for waterproofing works
Bitumen mastics, both hot and cold-applied, remain one of the most popular waterproofing materials. Among such compositions, MBR mastics, which are a multicomponent composition, are particularly relevant.
What is bitumen-rubber mastic and what types of its composition?
Bitumen-rubber mastic is an insulating compound that includes high-quality construction or insulating bitumen enriched with rubber fillers and plasticizers.
As a rule, this bitumen-rubber compound requires preheating, however, if an organic solvent is present in it, then the mastic does not need to be fired, but can be laid on the work surface immediately after opening the package. It is by the presence of a solvent that the modifications of the composition of bitumen-rubber mastic are determined - MBR for "hot" laying and MBR-X for "cold" application.
Each of the modifications of bitumen-rubber mastic has a specific brand, the distinguishing feature of which is the permissible softening temperature. The composition with the lowest softening point is MBR 65 mastic, and the composition with the highest heat resistance is MBR 100 mastic.
Features and purpose of bitumen-rubber material
The operational features of bitumen-rubber mastics are that they have high anti-corrosion properties, so the main purpose of the composition is to insulate underground steel pipes and other structures in order to provide protection from soil corrosion and excess moisture. In addition, MBR mastic, the use of which provides reliable and long-term protection of treated areas, also has:
  • high insulating properties;
  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to deformation;
  • optimal wear resistance;
  • high adhesion to metal substrates;
  • optimal heat resistance indicators;
  • ease of application;
  • the ability to operate in a wide temperature range;
  • impact strength;
  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • long service life.
It is worth noting that in addition to the advantages, the composition of MBR mastic for "hot" laying has a disadvantage, which is that if the permissible heating temperatures are not observed, the mastic ignites, so working with it requires special attention and compliance with all safety regulations and proper preparation of the composition for operation.
Technology of working with bitumen-rubber mastics
The process of working with the composition of bitumen-rubber mastic depends on its modification. For example, the "hot" ICBM composition needs to be preheated at temperatures from +160°C to +180°C. Only after the mastic has been brought to working condition, the composition is applied to the surface. As for the "cold" installation, in this case, MBR-X mastics do not require firing operations, but are applied to the surface after careful mixing of the composition throughout the entire volume of the container.
It should be noted that it is especially important to observe safety precautions when working with MBR mastic for hot application, since the composition is easily ignited upon contact with an open flame and if the permissible temperature ranges are not observed.
